After the unexpected tragic loss of Peter’s wife Philippa in May, 2016 Peter has decided to take the remainder of 2016 off from his teaching and casting engagements in order to concentrate on raising their daughter Millie.
Joining us this year for our casting schools will be Doug Taylor, long-time friend and fellow two-handed instructor of Pete. We are grateful of Doug and his willingness to step in and assist Pete during this time.
Muskegon River Lodge
Doug learned to fly fish in the small rivers of southern England, streams like the Piddle and the Frome. Eventually he fished from Ireland to the wilds of the Orkney Islands. During the ’70s he got interested in the Two-Handed rod but a stint in the British Army put paid to that. However it did allow him to experience fishing in Wales, Germany, Cyprus, Central America, and other unnamed locales. After moving to the Chicago area in the mid-80s, Doug renewed his interest in the Two-Hander, or Spey as you Yanks like to call it. He organized the first Spey events on the east side of Lake Michigan. As a Guide Staff, then Pro Staff of a major European Scandinavian rod manufacturer, he traveled to various states giving lessons and Spey Casting demonstrations.
During his time in America, Doug has fished Steelhead rivers in British Columbia, Ore-gon, Washington, Ontario, Ohio, and more locally the major Steelhead rivers of Michi-gan. Summers are spent chasing his second love, Smallmouth on the Kankakee with a Swtich rod and a Gartside Gurgler. To date Doug is a member of the Sage Elite Pro Staff, active in education, demonstration and anything that furthers the knowledge of Spey casting. In addition to offering private casting lessons, Doug also guides for Steel-head on the St. Joe.
